Step 1 – Get Organized
Understanding what you want to accomplish with your website and being very clear about your site’s call-to-action from the get go is key! Fill out this Website Worksheet to help get you started.
Step 2 – Sign up for Hosting
If you don’t already have it, sign up for hosting. Be sure to get Linux Hosting with cPanel access. See my post “How to Choose a Web Host?” for some helpful guidelines and recommendations.
Step 3 – Purchase a Domain Name
Purchase a domain name and while your at it, set up your email with your hosting service as well. email@example.com is a good one to have for general purposes, and perhaps one with your name as well (i.e. firstname.lastname@example.org.)
Step 4 – Install WordPress
Have your hosting service install WordPress on your main domain name.
Step 5 – Choose a Template
Choose a Template and purchase with installation service. You will save time and money having them install it for you. You’ll need to provide them with your FTP details. See my post “Choosing a WordPress Theme” for more information.
Step 6 – Get Building
Once your template is installed, it’s time to build. This is where I come in. I can get all the more advanced technical stuff out of the way for you so you can focus on the fun stuff. Once you have a structure, design, format, plugins, menu, and homepage that you like, I’ll teach you how to post to your blog, your gallery, or your portfolio, so you can be a creator on your own site.
